TWiT Needs a Highlight Show

Better yet, work a few highlights into This Week in Tech and Tech News Today.

Not a cumbersome amount...just very small, appropriate, newsworthy segments.

In this model, we would have This Week in Tech as the flagship weekly show, and TNT as the daily version of this, an within these two general-interest (general-interest for the tech enthusiast) shows, you will include highlights from your other network shows.

This way, people will pick up on other shows that they might like, and decide whether to add that podcast to their listening list.  If they enjoy the show, they might even become live listeners! (More about live listeners in a later post.)

Interested in science?  Maybe you hear a clip from Dr. Kiki's show during TNT, and decide to add that to your schedule?  Maybe you are more interested in Security issues?  I think we can all agree that this is a very important and topical issue...so why not play a short video of Gibson explaining something about it?

I know that the TNT crew is computer-savvy enough to explain security issues themselves. It's not about having a more qualified commentator.

It's about promoting the more specialized shows.

It's about letting your audience know what else you offer.

We want them saying to themselves "Hmm...maybe I should check out that show about...."

So mention All About Android, just have Howell refer to his show during TNT. He's already right there, and 500,000 more people activate android every day! Get in front of that!

Let people know where they can go for more in depth coverage.  Same goes for NSFW, or the Computer Hardware show, or that show where they rate the frames, or even that one about Chipotle, or the radio tech show, etc...

Hook them into TWiT and TNT, and let your general-interest audience filter down into their specific niches.

There are weeks when I just don't have time to listen to all the TWiT shows I would like, so it would be a great service to me to be able to see a highlight reel now and then.  You have some real experts working on these shows, and if I don't have time to watch every show, I at least want to feel like I'm keeping up with them.

I would wager that many of your listeners are similarly busy/productive.

And by the way...during your podcast, always mention what time the show is LIVE.  If someone really enjoys the show, that is where they may want to go next.  The live show and chat room is a completely different experience.

TWiT is a service.

TWiT is a service, and isn't that high praise?
TWiT is a valuable service to me, but I feel like it could be even more useful.
Where is my morning show? Many of us are easily able to stream live audio during our morning commutes.
Where is my evening news? Ok ok TNT mostly gets this done...but maybe there should be a short world-news segment? I don't want to "change the channel" in order to see the news.  I just need 5 minutes of "This is whats going on in the world beyond tech".  Then I can just keep in on TWiT. Hell, if I need to know more about some specific non-tech news story, I'm going to Google it anyway.  I just need the tip-off.  That way if there is a natural disaster, or a famous death, or an important discovery, I'll be informed, and I don't have to leave TWiT to do so.
Think "News for the tech savvy audience" rather than just "News about tech."
And if there is something important going on, who better to hear it from than Leo Laporte?  Isn't he the Walter Cronkite of our little community?  I'm dead serious.  There have been a few times when Leo was obviously very serious about something, and it makes us stop and listen BECAUSE we are familiar with him.  Cronkite was obviously talented, but it was our familiarity with him that made us feel something when he reacted a certain way to the news.
It's the same reason that if he's pushing a product, we know it's actually worthwhile.
TWiT is a service.
Serve your audience.  There are things we need that are not tech.  Anything that this audience needs to go elsewhere for is a missed opportunity for TWiT.
BUT please don't turn into another G4.  That would just break my heart (again).

Welcome

This is just a place for me to throw my random thoughts on various topics in an easily referenced format that I can point to while in message boards or chat rooms.
